Let's Talk About Martial Arts.

While the first mental image you get might be Bruce Lee or (if you're younger than me) Jet Li, Martial Arts as we know them now have their origins a whole lot further back. Today, there are numerous styles of martial arts practiced in countries all over the world. The most popular styles taught for kids around our area are Karate (origins in Japan), Taekwondo (Korea), and Jiu Jitsu (Brazil).

Why Martial Arts?

Several forms of Martial Arts are also a very popular extracurricular activity for kids and are known to have numerous developmental benefits. When it comes to physical benefits, an analysis of studies showed that martial arts participation in children resulted in increases in cardiorespiratory fitness, speed, agility, strength, flexibility, coordination, and balance. Many martial arts programs for children specifically promote the self-defense aspect as well (and what parent doesn't worry about how their kids will respond in the face of a bully someday??). Beyond the physical, martial arts have been shown to often have a strong component of mental health benefits as well, including reducing stress and anxiety, strengthening focus, increasing self-esteem, and developing greater emotional regulation.

Have we convinced you yet? If so, check out our handy list below on lots of local options for all those parents out there who could use a calmer, healthier, more focused child.
